The HIV Gun [Adult Content] - Sitting pretty in the moral zeitgeist

A was recently made aware of this despicable advert called “The HIV Gun”.

Now here were my first thoughts regarding this advert:

  1. It insinuates that men purposely do this to their partners.
  2. The lines are gender split – the victims are women and the perpetrators are men.
  3. It man bashes and the most common canards about men are unrepresentative or untrue.
  4. No stats are presented, I have been criticised for this in the past but for augments that were logical and didn’t need stats.

Now, I want to make the point that the claims made in this PSA may be true and they may be untrue, I am sceptical about the claims they make and the claims don’t seem to be backed up in anyway and regards information that I have not heard before, the website for the advert dosen’t list evidence and instead links to another website which is called “UNAIDS” and Unaids is an imitative for the global coalition on women and aids. Now, all these things raise red flags in my mind I simply will not take on good faith the claims that are just presented, the corresponding website has sections that sound like they were lifted from a feminist pamphlet and the feminist are not known for telling the truth.

I am also cautious because the advert is very politically correct.

  1. All the perpetrators are male, even in a problem that can occur between both sexes. See domestic violence.
  2. All the men are white.
  3. Men are portrayed as the bad guy in a problem that if true can be solved by mutual corporation.
  4. All the men are white and the victims are mixed race

The last point may seem a bit unnecessary, after all what does it matter what the race of the people are? It matters because race actually relates to this issue. In a 2006 Health protection agency centre for infectious diseases published a report that stated:

"The annual number of infections newly diagnosed in heterosexual men and women born in Sub-Saharan Africa remains high at 3,136 in 2004. There has also been a slow but steady rise in the number of heterosexual infections probably acquired in the UK in recent years from 227 in 2000 to 498 in 2004. Most of these individuals were probably infected by partners who were themselves presumed to have been infected outside Europe, mainly in Africa. As the number of black and minority ethnic heterosexuals living with HIV (diagnosed and undiagnosed) in the UK grows, the likelihood of heterosexual transmission within the UK will increase."

Now this applies mainly to Britain, but I’m sure that it applies to other places as well. So what this says is that immigrants from areas with a high amount of AIDs account for most of the rise in HIV in Britain, which is a completely reasonable statement. Most of these people are from Africa and this it is reasonable assumption that therefore they will be black, there are no black people in this PSA.

This is the root of my grievance with this ad. The problem is misrepresented in the name of political correctness, and because of this many people will be infected with AIDS when they might not have been if the truth was told. But then saving lies takes second place to promulgating the PC zeitgeist in the minds of these people.

    This Advert is another ploy to portray women as Victims of "Men". This 'Message" that women are better off without men is a Staple of the "Lesbian Separatist Movement", a primmer on such ideology can be found in an Article written by Julie McCrossen at: Http://www.takver.com/history/womyn.htm.

    So true. All women are oppressed by white men. White men are the cause of all the evil in the world. White men must pay for all the crimes that no person other than white men commit, exempt when forced to by white men. Typical - and any attempts to fight this portrayal of white men is met with the response of "racist" and "gynophobe"...

    It's advertising the fastest growing demographic, that is what the brief to the advertising agency would have been therefore why would they have females killing men? That doesn't target the right audience. But I do agree that any HIV advertising should target all audiences, and some of the men should be black/hispanic/asian whatever. But seriously it's not a bad ad, it's the target audience you don't agree with.
